many small people who in many small places do many small things that can alter the face of the world mural

Making small changes in our lifestyle will help in protecting not only our Natural World but, just as importantly, our Wellbeing. Removing plastics and harmful chemicals from the products we use on a daily basis will have positive effects on the Environment and on our Health.

PLASTIC POLLUTION

PLANET

Plastic Pollution in our planet´s environment adversely affects wildlife, wildlife habitat and humans. The effects of Plastic Pollution has a physical impact on marine life, a chemical impact on our ecosystem and an economic impact. The pollution comes from household waste which is poorly recycled, dumped in landfills or abandoned in nature.

Every time plastic is recycled, its quality decreases. The same piece of plastic can only be recycled 2-3 times before its quality decreases to a point where it can no longer be used. Each time plastic is recycled additional virgin material is added to help “upgrade” its quality so that the recycled product is more durable. So, when you read the label “Recycled Material” think twice about what the word “Recycled” actually means.

You also need to be aware that not all plastic is recyclable, for example, plastic bags, straws, coffee cups, cotton buds, disposable single use cutlery etc. So making small changes in our every day routine to non plastic, reusable products will make an enormous impact in the fight against Plastic Pollution.

We live in a plastic era from the clothes we wear to the food we eat, plastic has become a household staple for families and communities around the world. Given its prominence and the fact that scientists estimate it takes somewhere between 450-1,000 years to decompose (some argue it will never decompose), it is essential for us to understand this material.

ONLY POWERED BY KNOWLEDGE CAN WE TAKE THE NECESSARY ACTIONS TO TRANSFORM OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH PLASTIC AND PROTECT OUR FAMILIES, COMMUNITIES & THE ENVIRONMENT.

PERSONAL CARE

There are many things you need to avoid in order to have a truly eco-friendly lifestyle. The most important of these is to ensure that your face scrub, body wash, toothpaste and other personal care products that you use do not contain microbeads. Microbeads are manufactured tiny particles of solid plastic found in many of our everyday hygiene products that then make their way into our water system. Once in the water system, microbeads can have a damaging effect on marine life, the environment and our wellbeing.

Microbeads have the ability to absorb toxins which in turn can potentially transfer up the marine food chain. They are not biodegradable and almost impossible to remove from the environment. Many countries have already banned the use of  microbeads, these countries include New Zealand, Canada and the US. Until the world has come together to unanimously ban its use, we can do our part to ensure we remove microbead containing products from our personal hygiene routine.

Here are a few eco-friendly lifestyle tips everyone can make to their personal care routine:

Shampoo, Body Soap, Hand Wash, Face Wash – choose soap bars made with essential oils or instead of a soap bar, purchase soap in an aluminium bottle that can be refilled.

Deodorant – choose natural deodorant bar, balm or paste in an aluminium tin.

Shower Body Exfoliator – choose a bamboo brush or a sustainable fibre mitten/sponge.

Makeup Removers – choose reusable cotton discs or cloths.

Dental Hygiene – choose a bamboo toothbrush, natural mineral toothpaste, natural fibre dental floss and natural mineral mouthwash tablets.

Hair Brush – choose a natural bamboo hairbrush.

Menstruation – choose a plastic free menstrual cup or washable cloth pads.

Razor – choose an eco-friendly plastic free safety razor. You only need to change the blade.

Cosmetics – choose natural, vegan, cruelty-free alternatives.

Choosing “natural” personal care products is now easier than ever and, if you want to go one step further, choosing “vegan natural” products and choosing to “eat less meat” – all will help in the fight against environmental pollution and deforestation.

EAT LESS MEAT

You will have heard that consuming meat has an enormous impact on the environment. The agricultural business creates as much greenhouse gas emissions as the entire world’s cars, trucks and planes due to the immense volume of deforestation required to make way for livestock not to mention the methane gas the animals themselves produce. The demand for meat and the use of livestock by-products contributes to the levels of carbon and other pollutants affecting our environment.

DEFORESTATION

Human deforestation is caused by the permanent removal of trees in order to clear the land for agriculture, grazing or to use the timber for fuel, construction, or manufacturing. Ecological sustainability is very important when it comes to eco-friendly living. The loss of trees and vegetation has a dramatic effect on climate change, flooding and increases greenhouse gases in the atmosphere – to name just a few of the problems! By making these small changes, we can help:

Plant a Tree

Go Paperless at Home and in the Office

Support the Products of Companies that are committed to reducing deforestation

Purchase Certified Wood Products

Purchase Recycled Products and Recycle them again

The forests are the oldest ecosystem on our planet. If deforestation is not stopped, the devastating effect to nature will be irreparable.
